BLOG TASK 1 - ‘Analyse an item of clothing from your own wardrobe’
An initial critique that can be made with regards to this item of clothing is that despite only being produced in 2019 its design is cracked and weathered, however this was an intentional look decided upon by its manufacturer who purposely made it look vintage. The colour is a faded black, almost dark grey, and the faded, retro design is cracked to such an extent that its almost discernible from a distance. The graphic itself is a promotion for a recent film reboot of ‘Bill and Ted's excellent adventure’ which has had various quotes translated to Japanese and printed throughout various locations. When you look at which aspects of society this item represents particular sub cultures stand out ,such as hipsters and some aspects of geek culture, however I feel this shirt best acts as a critique of modern grunge culture. Consisting of muted colours and generally well worn older items of clothing grunge culture I feel is best represented by a general “I don't care how I look” sense. In addition to this the grunge is a style of fashion generally found within the working class, so it brings with it particular class connotations when looked upon by broader society. However it should be noted that a vast majority of the clothing popularised by this style of fashion was manufactured during the 90’s, whereas this shirt was produced only last year, I feel it evidences the fact that arguably our society craves the look that an aged item of clothing has, that of distressed fabric and faded colours, however is becoming less willing to jeopardize a degree of function in order to achieve this look.
